Disney World Tips - A Look at a Value Resort

If you are on a budget and planning a Disney World vacation there are many ways you can save money. You can save a lot just by staying at one of Disney’s Value Resorts. Disney has four value resorts, Pop Century, All-Star Movies, All-Star Music, and All-Star Sports. Honestly, how much time do you really plan on being in your hotel while you are at Disney World. In this article I am going to review one of the value resorts we stayed at during our recent visit to Disney World.

Our last visit to Disney World was with our family of four, with kids 8 and 5 years old, and we stayed at Disney’s All Star Movies. The theme behind this resort pays tribute to Disney Classic movies and characters. Our room was based on the movie “Mighty Ducks”. There were giant hockey sticks around the building and right outside was the swimming pool. The swimming pool followed the movie theme, Goofy was the goalie and the entire swimming pool was made to look like a ice hockey rink. I was pleased to see that every morning the staff was at the pool cleaning and sanitizing all of the pool chairs. There is another larger pool located at the main building of the resort. This pool is known as the Fantasia Pool, as it has Mickey from Fantasia shooting water into the air.

The hotel room was just your average hotel room. It followed the movie theme with movie posters and popcorn tub sconces. It’s nice that each room has a built in safe to secure your valuables.

To get to the theme parks you can catch one of the Disney buses that is going to your park. The buses may be crowded since they are shared between the other All-Star Resorts, All-Star Music and All-Star Sports. Since All-Star Movies is last to be picked up there were times when I did have to stand because of a crowed bus.

There is a quick service restaurant at this resort. Most of our meals were at the theme parks. We did find the breakfast at the restaurant average. Payment was made using the Disney dining plan purchased ahead of time.

Overall I think the All-Star Movies is a good resort for those with kids. Adults may find the resort to be a little loud especially late at night and if you are close to the swimming pool. It is a value resort and I think it is worth the money saved.

Advice About Choosing the Right Drinking Water Containers

With increasing awareness, the whole issue of drinking water containers is becoming more an issue these days. It’s been recently reported that school authorities in a number of Canadian regions are deciding to ban bottles from their schools. As well, a number of universities are starting off with “bottle-free zones.”

The bans are a result of concerns to various health issues about drinking water from plastic and, unknowingly, being exposed to harmful containers. As well, there is a growing environmental awareness about the problems of stock piling so many plastic bottles.

So what’s a viable alternative?

In short, you need glass drinking water containers.

Why plastic drinking water containers are not a great idea

A plastic drinking water container is all right for occasional use, but chemical residues can be absorbed by liquids stored in plastic. There are two chemicals, in particular, that I would like to cover in this article.  They are BPA and phthalate. There has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding the use of BPA or Bisphenol A to create polymers that will hold foods and beverages. It is used to line the interior of canned goods and in the production of some drinking water containers.

The monomer is instrumental in the production of polycarbonate, which is an unbreakable resin with many uses, but particularly for protecting the eyes in sports and industry. Your racquetball goggles are made of polycarbonate.

So, industries are concerned that if they were not allowed to use the substance in a drinking water container or a tin can, protective eyewear would be the next thing to go. Big companies always support the continued use of dangerous chemicals, for just as long as they can. Otherwise, they have to spend more money on developing safer products or they might lose a portion of their business, if specific applications were halted.

What’s happening with new legislation about plastic water bottles

But, currently, both the US and Canada are pressing forth with legislation prohibiting the use of BPA in bottles and drinking water containers designed for infants.  Why? Both, BPA and the other chemical I mentioned above, phthalate, act like the hormone estrogen within the human body.

Studies conducted by the CDC found BPA in the urine of 95% of sampled adults and 93% of sampled children. There are some areas where exposure cannot be prevented, but you can easily avoid a plastic drinking water container.

So, what effect will a substance that imitates estrogen have on the human body? Well, of course we cannot conduct tests on human beings. They could be killed accidentally. So, all of the studies have been conducted on mice and rates. The effects were numerous. They are the primary reasons that I suggest glass drinking water containers.

First, even at very low doses, there were permanent changes in the genital tracts and breast tissue of the animals. At a little higher daily dose, there was increased prostate weight, by 30%, but lower overall body weight and early onset of puberty. At a little higher dosage, there was a decline in testicular testosterone. Then came decreased maternal behavior and finally the normal sex differences in brain structure and behavior were reversed.

It is daily exposure that is believed to be harmful, so taking a polycarbonate drinking water container on a hiking trip, once in a while, should be fine. Especially, since the water will not be stored in the bottle for a long period of time.

You can even get them with replaceable filters so that you can remove contaminants from what you drink. But, for everyday use, get a good home filtration system and buy some glass drinking water containers.  It is simply the safest and best tasting choice.

Water and Rotten Egg Smells - Where it Comes From and What You Can Do

If you have a well for your drinking water, or are on a well system, changes are you may have noticed a rotten egg smell coming from the taps.

The rotten egg smell you comes from a chemical called hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is produced by sulfur reducing bacteria that sometimes reside in various parts of shallow water aquifers.

The hydrogen sulfide is the bacterial by product of it’s metabolic processes when it reduces sulfur for energy. Basically, hydrogen sulfide is bacterial waste matter.

Only certain shallow wells have this problem. It is more likely to occur if you have a dug well or bored well, but it can occur in any well in a shallow aquifer. Sometimes it’s a seasonal issue, and with other wells it occurs all the time.

Hydrogen sulfide is a very powerful odour causing chemical. The human threshold for detecting hydrogen sulfide is a concentration of only 0.0005 parts per million. At 0.1 ppm, it becomes very displeasing to people.

As bad as it smells, at the low concentrations found in well water it is not toxic. It’s not even an irritant, it’s only an aesthetic problem. The chemical is easily removed from water as well. It’s easily oxidized by chlorine, or another oxidant. I’ve installed treatment equipment in three locations that have hydrogen sulfide in the water. I’ve used hydrogen peroxide to oxidize the sulfide with great success. If the water is a pH of less than 7, the sulfide reduces to colloidal sulphur, which does not smell. At a pH of greater than 7, it forms sulphate, which also does not smell. As a bonus, hydrogen peroxide itself reduces to water and produces no chemical by products like chlorine may.

The chemical can also be removed with an activated carbon filter. You can either purchase an inline whole house filter, small filters that go under the sink and have a separate spigot to treat only the water you drink or cook with, or there are water jugs with built in carbon filters. Because carbon filters are an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, it is of utmost importance to replace the filter at the manufacturer recommended intervals.

Hydrogen sulfide also is a product of microbiological activity in sewers, and it’s a component of sewer gas. Often people who complain of rotten egg smell in their water are actually smelling sewer gas.

Sinks all have what’s called a P-trap in their drains. I’m sure you’ve seen the goose neck plumbing under a sink. The purpose of a P-trap is to trap some water in the drain at all times, as a barrier to sewer gas. With some P-traps of inferior design, as soon as you turn the tap on the flowing water will break the water barrier and allow some sewer gas to come up from the drain. You will then smell some sewer gas and you will associate it with the water, because you did not smell it until you turned the tap on.

While the rotten egg smell in your water is an annoyance, it can be easily remedied with some simple technologies.

Gites Were Originally Started to Help the Falling Income of Agriculture Industry in France

I remember my first stay in a gite de France and I will never forget it. Every time we switch on an electric appliance the lights would blow. The wiring would glow during the night which was perhaps our only form of heating. The beds were from the Victorian age, this is only a guess as they were only 1.50 meters long and my legs would hang out the bottom of the bed so the French mosquitoes could enjoy an English holiday maker. The shower was not much better, enough hot water for one person per day. Do not worry things have changed.

Now days gite de France is a well organized. All those offering gites have regular inspections by gite de France and have to comply to the regulations of gite de France. All gites are classified according to their location, comfort and amenities and on merit are awarded by an “ear de corn” ranging from one to four. What is a French Gite Holiday in a French Gites Like ? For those of us that have used gite de France or had a gite holiday in a French gites we immediately relate the word French gite to holiday accommodation which is exactly what it is. But it is strange that the word gite or French gites is not used in the English speaking part of the world except when referring to France. Even the English and other nationalities that have settled in France use the word French gite or gite to explain their holiday accommodation.

In France many forms of gite or gites exist such as: Gite Rural, Gite Chambre d’hotes, Gite d’enfants, Gite d’etape et gite de sejour and Gite accessible. gite rural Limousin. The word gite is also becoming popular with different regions of France for instant you have gite de Charente or Gite Rural Limousin last month alone there was 569 searches each day for the word gite rural Limousin. In our village they have started a website called Brossac Gites and there are over 300 gites upon it.

French Gite Holiday

A typical French gite holiday After you have made your booking, which can be done in advance by witting, by telephone or on the Internet you load up your car with all that you may need including your bed linen toweling and probably a lot more than you will ever use you head off for the voyage ahead car full of kids and thoughts of previous French gite holidays. After negotiating the auto routes, service stations and not forgetting the peage (Otherwise know as a donation to the auto route de France) Eventually you arrive to be welcomed by the gite owner. You are all prepared with your rusty knowledge of the French language only to find the owner is Belgium or English and speaks perfect English. This could be the case now days as many foreigner who have settled in

France run Gites or Gite holidays and do so very well. After you have unloaded the car made up the beds you may have time to rustle up something to eat before you can settle back and relax. The next morning it is up and off to the village to take on some bread and other French delicacies for breakfast (Remember they close at midday). You just have time to finish the last croissant and clear up the breakfast dishes before you are off to the supermarche to stock up and do not forget Lunch today. If you are like me you arrive at the supermarche just in time for Lunch closing and have to come back again at 3.00 o’clock. Well what ever you end up fighting your way round the supermarche eventually you check out Normally they have 5 cash desks but only one in operation because of staff holidays, I wonder if they are having a gite holiday in a gite rural Limousin or Charente.

Anyway it is back to the Gite for Lunch (That’s if you made it before 12) and maybe just maybe you will have time for an excursion. The days normally pass this way it is a bit like being at home doing what you normally do but in a different place.having said all this I have had some great gite holidays and some awful ones as well but, I would recommend that you take one and then let me know or write an article and I will put it upon this page.

Visa-Free Travel to the US Under the Visa Waiver Program Explained

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) enables nationals of certain countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. The program was established in 1986 with the objective of eliminating unnecessary barriers to travel, stimulating the tourism industry, and permitting the Department of State to focus consular resources in other areas. VWP eligible travelers may apply for a visa, if they prefer to do so.

Currently, 27 countries participate in the Visa Waiver Program, as shown below:

  1. Andorra
  2. Australia
  3. Austria
  4. Belgium
  5. Brunei
  6. Denmark
  7. Finland
  8. France
  9. Germany
  10. Iceland
  11. Ireland
  12. Italy
  13. Japan
  14. Liechtenstein
  15. Luxembourg
  16. Monaco
  17. Netherlands
  18. New Zealand
  19. Norway
  20. Portugal
  21. San Marino
  22. Singapore
  23. Slovenia
  24. Spain
  25. Sweden
  26. Switzerland
  27. United Kingdom

The Department of Homeland Security recently signed the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Malta, and Korea government representatives.

These MOU’s do not admit these countries into the Visa Waiver Program; they are agreements for further cooperation on the security provisions that are required under the new VWP law. They are only a first step in working out details for the entire array of security and information sharing commitments found in VWP law.

Nationals of VWP countries must meet the conditions noted in the section above in order to seek admission to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. Travelers who do not meet these conditions must apply for a visa. In particular, a visa must be requested if the traveler:

* Wants to remain in the United States for longer than 90 days, or envisions that they may wish to change their status (from tourism to student, etc.) once in the United States;

* Wants to work or study in the United States, wants to come to the United States for other purposes not allowed on a visitor visa, or intends to immigrate to the United States;

* Does not have a machine-readable passport (MRP) issued or renewed/extended before 10/26/05, or is unable to meet other requirements outlined above for passports issued on or after October 26, 2005 or October 26, 2006.

* Intends to travel by private aircraft or other non-signatory air or sea carriers to the United States;

* Has been refused a visa or admission to the United States before, or did not comply with the conditions of previous VWP admissions (90 days or less stay for tourism or business, etc.); or

* Has a criminal record or other condition making them ineligible for a visa.
