Where To Go Sailing This Spring - Some Old Favorites and a New Guest Dock

The winter doldrums are past, giving way to the fresh breeze and wildflower covered headlands that signals some of the best sailing this planet sees.

The only new guest dock to sail to this year is oddly, here in San Francisco. As part of the
rebuild of Piers 1 and 3, a guest dock was added, YES a guest dock. Purely for the use of transient vessels. Located on the North side of the final ferry landing at the also restored ferry building, the dock is approximately 125 feet long and has landings on both sites in an odd, tiered fashion. Careful here as the current will have SIGNIFICANT effect on your landing (pilings to the south). There are no overnights and I believe there’s a 4 hour limit.

Overnight guest docking is always a hassle anywhere in the Bay Area with the exception of South Beach Harbor. Moorings are few and far between and in most spots, required for a solid nights sleep. The current and nighttime swell that manages to sneak in under the Gate adds to the already complex tide issues.

Current mooring locations include Angel Island’s Ayala Cove, Sausalito Yacht Club, Tiburon and Aquatic Park. Check on the mooring ball for contact information. Make sure you actually do this as it’s pretty awkward getting kicked off a reserved mooring ball in the middle of the night.

Spending the night in a marina is always possible, given careful planning. Most harbors have vacant slips or a very limited number of transient berths. Make sure you call that specific harbor WELL in advance to insure that there’s a place for you when you arrive. My favorite overnight harbor spots include: Schoonmaker Point, Sausalito; Jack London Square, Oakland; Corinthian Yacht Club, Tiburon; Redwood Harbor, Redwood City; and Benecia Yacht Club, Benecia.

I try to take at least one river trip annually. These are wonderful adventures but you careful and diligent navigation practices are a must in these ever changing waterways. The Napa river offers perhaps one of the most picturesque opportunities to venture into the heartland of America’s vineyards. Spectacular in the Spring. The long haul up the Petaluma is rewarded with a lovely downtown harbor, quiet and peaceful. Both rivers require careful planning and have overhead obstructions and lift/draw bridges to contend with.

Everyone should own Bob and Carol Mehaffery’s “Cruising San Francisco Bay.” I can’t recommend this book enough for anyone sailing in the Bay Area. It’s one of our most important resources and stays up to date through revision and editing. It comes complete with fine illustration work and a full-sized, fold out chart of the Bay Area. We have it available at our bookshop in the harbor, Call us and we can ship one out to you right away. Otherwise, you can always find it at Amazon.

Whatever you do this Spring, make sure you get out there; cruise, race, daysail, overnight or just grab a couple of hours and a few friends and share the most wonderful resource this area has, San Francisco Bay.

See you out on the water….Drew

How to Plan a Cheap Vacation in the Bahamas

A trip to the Bahamas does not have to also mean a trip to a loan officer. The beautiful islands offer vacations for every budget. Even those with little to spare can make their way to the white and pink beaches by finding a cheap Bahamas vacation online. Websites such as Priceline and Hotwire are great places to start looking for a cheap Bahamas vacation These websites generally offer all-inclusive vacations, which helps to make the shopping experience easier. There are also plenty of other, lesser-known websites where travelers can find amazing deals on rentals, plane tickets, and more.

A cheap Bahamas vacation rental does not have to mean a lower standard of living. Consider Cookies Cabanas, a guest house on the beach of Cat Island. The home features a bedroom and bath with a double bed plus a hideaway bed and sits just 20 feet from a restaurant. Even better, this vacation home is only $90 per day. This low-priced home sits on an island considered one of the most beautiful in the Bahamas with high cliffs, densely-forested foothills, and 60 miles of deserted pink-and-white sand beach,.
In addition to cheap Bahamas vacation rentals, the Internet also offers many Bahamas vacation deals. Once again, vacation websites such as Priceline, Hotwire, and Orbitz are always publishing new Bahamas vacation deals. These websites often have last-minute vacation deals that offer spur-of-the-moment travelers a lower-price airline ticket so that the airline company can sell as many seats as possible.

Regardless of whether the traveler is leaving immediately or planning a vacation months in advance, it is always a good idea to purchase vacation packages on websites such as these, as packages often mean a savings over vacation arrangements purchased individually. The Bahamas is no longer a vacation destination only for the well-to-do. Thanks to online vacation websites, cheap deals can be found to suit any budget.

Airboat Rides in Florida

Florida is a mass of swamps, lakes and rivers and one of the best ways of getting around in this environment is in an airboat, particularly in the Everglades. With its flat hull and large pusher airplane propellor on the back an airboat is able to ride over both land and water with minimal impact on the environment. It needs only a fraction of an inch of water under the hull.

If you are staying pretty much anywhere in Florida, particularly in Central or Southern Florida, then one of the most fun things you can do is go on a Florida airboat ride

Riding in an airboat is truly exhilarating. One minute you could be drifting slowly down a creek shrouded in mist and surrounded by tall mangrove and cypress trees festooned with Spanish Moss and the next minute you are speeding along a narrow channel cut through 8 foot high reed beds at 45 mph with the engine racing at full throttle just feet from your ears.

The highlight of our first ride was when the captain shot straight over a bank and then did a 360 degree turn without any warning. The whole experience was a bit like riding a rollercoaster but without all the ups and downs.

Once you are out in the wetlands you should get the opportunity to see a wide range of Florida wildlife in their natural habitat; anything from soft-shelled turtles, bald eagles, numerous water birds such as blue herons, cranes, egrets and anhinga and of course alligators.

Your best chances of seeing an alligator is on one of the night time airboat rides when their eyes are picked up in the light of torches shone into the darkness. Because alligators are cold blooded, they take a while to get going in the mornings particularly during the winter months so you are generally more likely to see them during the afternoons than first thing in the morning.

Most airboat companies require a reservation but some of the larger companies operate every 30 minutes throughout the day and you can often just turn up and ride. If you are planning a night trip then you definitely need to book in advance.

Types of Florida airboats

There are really two types of Florida airboat ride, the traditional style small airboats that hold a handful of people, typically up to 6 passengers and the large barge type airboats built specifically for airboat rides that can take as many as 18 to 20 passengers at a time. Both are fun to ride in but the smaller boats are more manoeuvrable and somehow you just feel more in touch with your surroundings in the traditional style airboats.

In some places you can even rent an airboat and drive it yourself though naturally they are not as fast as the real airboats.

Typical Florida airboat ride prices

Tours can range from 30 minutes up to several hours. Expect to pay around $20 for a 30 minute trip, $30-$40 for a one hour trip and $40-$60 for 90 minute trip. Children (3-12 years old) generally pay about half the adult rate and under 2s go free.

Self drive rental airboats cost about $30 per hour.

There are a lot of companies competing for business so look out for discount airboat ride coupons in visitor guides and even on the airboat companies own websites (see our Florida airboat rides directory).

A Dream Come True - My First Trip to Italy!

For many years I dreamed of someday taking a trip to Europe. Well it finally came true last spring. After 3 years of planning and saving money on March 28th 2008 I left for an 11 day escorted tour of Italy. I have to admit I was a bit scared since this was the first time that far away from home and also I went by myself. But I had the time of my life!

I did a lot of research and looked at a lot of travel agencies and the tours they offered. Since I was traveling alone I was looking for a travel agency that offered an escorted tour for solo travelers, not single travelers. The last thing I needed was one of those match making trips. Please, I have enough people at home trying to match me with someone. The last thing I needed was putting myself through that torture in another country!

I came across this 11 day escorted tour. I inquired about the total cost of the tour and opened my “Trip to Europe” savings account. I also began the process of applying for a passport; As soon as I received it I booked the trip and paid the deposit. As soon as I had enough money I paid for the balance.

The tour began in the beautiful city of Rome. On the way there our Tour Director, told us about the history of the European Nation, more specifically, Italy and its way of living. As we entered the city of Rome, we see the Arch of Constantine, and yes an Egyptian Pyramid. You would not expect to see a pyramid in Rome, but yes, there is one. A rich Roman magistrate, Gaius Cestius, had a pyramid built as his tomb.

We began the tour of the outside of the Colisseum, the circus Maximus, the Pallatine, the Arch of Constantine, the remains of the temple of Venus, temple of Jupiter and Juno, the Baths of Caracalla and the remains of Capitol Hill. We then boarded our motorcoach and took a tour of some of the historical sites in Rome. We saw the Museum of Artists, Capitol Hill, and the mouth of truth “Bocca della Verità” and the Bridge of Angels. Wee ended our tour with the Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Museum and, of course, the Vatican.

Atlatis Resort Paradise Island Bahamas

Atlantis Resort at Paradise Island, Bahamas is exactly what the location says, paradise. The landscape is unbelievable with water parks for the kids and grown ups. A lazy river ride for adults and fish everywhere, the water park is fantastic. The water park alone feels like an adventure park that should cost 50 dollars a day. There are two slides that send you through shark tanks after an accelerating ride down the slides. There is also two other water slides that are as fast as can be and will keep you occupied all day. If your looking for some open water enjoyment there are Jet Ski’s for rent on the ocean side that let you race across a crystal clear ocean.

When it’s time to relax you can sit by the beach but let me recommend staying at the Paradise Lagoon beach where a drink is just a flag wave away. The Lagoon is just large enough to be a large swim across. People enjoy the lagoon with a swim or the little paddle boats that are rented across. When your hungry for lunch take a swim or a walk and hit up the Lagoon Bar and Grill for a great sandwich or salad with an afternoon drink.

And of course do not forget the casino, after you outside adventures come in for the night for a full casino. The sports book is one of the best you will see in the islands making you think you’re in Vegas it self but much more relaxed. Of course everything is accessible using your room key so watch out; I’d recommend putting that back in your pocket.

It could take me days to write about all the shops and spas that Atlantis provides. There is no inclination to leave the resort to explore the rest of the island once you are their. The staff is very accommodating and will help out with whatever you need. If you go I recommend a massage at sunset on the beach on your first night as that will put you in the right mood for your stay.
